Partner
With nearly 20 years' experience in the service industry, Simon understands every aspect of the company. His management skills, which have been in use since he left school, combined with those of his business partner, Tony Felgate, have proved a firm foundation for Monthind to build on.
From the age of sixteen, Simon spent eight years in the Royal Artillery, eventually attaining the rank of Bombardier. He toured Northern Ireland, Belize and Canada and was stationed in Germany for much of his career. For Simon the army was the opportunity to gain a degree in common sense and management - skills he still draws on.
Simon complimented his management skills with retail experience gained through management programmes - first with McDonalds, then later with Iceland, where he became District Manager.
Soon after he became a father, he became Cleaning Manager at nearby Pearl Insurance in Peterborough - which offered a better-work life balance while his daughter was young.
After reaching area manager level, Simon became Divisional Manager at Cambridge-based OCS, working there for five years. Whilst here he became aware of Monthind - viewed as strong competition with its all-female management team and staff-orientated ethos.
Simon's career progressed after he joined Mowlem Pall Mall Support Services as Operations Director, where he stayed for five years.
After Mowlem Pall Mall, Simon wanted to manage something smaller, but with more opportunities to become involved in new elements of running a business. Monthind's MD, Tony Clarke, who Simon knew through the Cleaning Support Services Association, made him Operations Director. This appointment was a leap of faith, but Simon didn't disappoint. His army-learned management skills helped him motivate the workforce.
Family-orientated Simon enjoys travelling, rugby, golf and staying fit. A Highland Dancer in his youth, he passed this interest to his daughter who was the England under-12 Champion for three years. He is reviving an interest in motorcycling this year.
Against the backdrop of a low staff turnover rate, Simon has been developing a marketing strategy with the management team that will take Monthind to the next level.
Simon's aptitude for planning and strategy combines well with Tony Felgate's financial skills, making a wonderful partnership which has formed the backbone of the company.
Partner
Tony (a CIMA-qualified accountant) joined Monthind in April 2004 after spending sixteen years working for a large logistics organisation.
Tony left Fakenham Grammar school after passing his 'O' levels. He planned to become a chef but the lure of numbers was too much, and he took a YTS position as an accounts clerk.
Several positons later, Tony became a trainee management accountant at Russell Davies in Felixstowe.
After Russel Davies was acquired, Tony stayed with the firm, becoming Management Accountant, Project Accountant, then Finance Director. When DHL later purchased the company, Tony became Director of Commercial Accounting. When his office moved to Birmingham, Tony decided to look for a position locally. Soon after he became Finance Director at Monthind.
Tony brought in a more corporate ethos in response to the challenges facing Monthind, resulting in positive change after several months.
Company size isn't the only measure of success, explains Tony. "We now have a better culture of austerity ... strong control mechanisms. But we're not penny-pinching, decisions are made on a commercial basis." Tony has helped Monthind make considered decisions about future relationships with banks, suppliers and clients alike. His accounting and management skills have helped Monthind forecast five years ahead, structure training and compliance, and satisfy both public and private sector needs.
Tony and business partner Simon Biggs share the vision of improving profitability, not just growing the top-line and ensuring the evolution of the business for all its stakeholders. Together, they recognise the uniqueness of Monthind; a mid-range firm that has the back-office services and resources to meet the needs of large corporate clients, but with the personal approach of a small company.
Tony is proud of Monthind's very low staff turnover rate; he believes in recruiting staff for their aptitude and enthusiasm rather than just their qualifications and supports the apprenticeship scheme. "I started my career on a Youth Training Scheme, and I'm proof that you don't have to have a degree to reach the top. If you are prepared to work hard and study for associated qualifications where necessary, I believe you have what it takes, and will support my staff through their training."
Outside of work Tony loves hiking, photography, DJ-ing, attending festivals and gigs, and collecting records. A food aficionado, Tony enjoys trying new restaurants and whilst his career as a chef did not come to fruition, he still takes pleasure in cooking for friends and family. Tony has DJ'd all over the country and his eclectic musical tastes range from Electronic to Northern Soul.
East Division
John Nugent served in the British Army for 25 years, taking up a variety of postings -including in Berlin, West Germany, Northern Ireland, Canada, Falkland Islands, France, Portugal, Cyprus and Jordan.
After achieving the rank of Warrant Officer Class 2, John left the army in 1995 and started his first job at British Sugar in Ipswich. In 1996, John joined London-based Pall Mall Cleaning and Support Services. After being Area Manager he became Account Manager, looking after 12 sites and £1.4m worth of business.
Joined Monthind as Regional Manager in 2001
In 1999 John joined East Anglia-based Executive Cleaning as a Project Manager. After 18 months John made the move to Monthind and was appointed Regional Manager in May 2001. By 2003 John was Divisional Manager and by 2005 he was the Business Manager firstly for Essex, then taking on Suffolk and North Essex - a role he continues in to-date.
John's role encompasses both operational and sales activities and he currently manages three Contract Managers, four Contract Support Managers, five Site Managers and numerous operatives.
Full service offer
The majority of John's contracts are Daily Office Cleaning, but over the years he has developed a full service offer including Caretaking, Concierge and Security Services, Power Station cleans, Residential Apartment and Communal Area, Housing Association void cleans and repairs - and even cleaning Marinas. More recently, John's team are able to offer a Property Maintenance Service involving painting and decorating, ground maintenance and window cleaning, among other services.
Specialist & Biohazard Cleaning
Lloyd Pentney has been in the cleaning industry for over 16 years, starting out as a supervisor across 25 Norfolk sites with a carpet cleaning company. He then became Area Manager for a firm looking after an Essex Police cleaning contract.
In 2001 Monthind Clean won the Essex Police contract and gave Lloyd the opportunity to run the contract under Monthind. Eleven years later, Lloyd has overseen two tender processes and achieved extensions through good performance.
Unique cleaning for Essex Police
The Essex Police contract is not a standard Daily Office Clean (DOC) - it involves vehicle, cell and forensic cleaning, crime scene biohazard clean-up and supporting the Police at public events such as air shows, Dale Farm and even hijack situations at Stansted airport.
In 2012 Lloyd took a Bio-Engineer course and qualified as a Bio-First Aider and Bio-Engineer - this certification allows him to attend all four categories of Biohazard cleaning.
Lloyd is supported by a great team who have worked with him for over five years, ready to answer call-outs 24/7. Lloyd has trained more than 40 additional operatives to the level of Bio-First Aider, allowing Monthind Clean to respond to category 3 & 4 Biohazard jobs across East Anglia.
Business Improvement Manager role
In addition to his responsibilities as Business Manager for Biohazard and for the Essex Police contract, in January 2016 Lloyd became contract manager for Essex Cares and the South Essex Division. More recently in 2018 Lloyd now focuses his efforts on all aspects of specialist and biohazard cleaning services for Monthind Clean.
Lloyd says: "Every day is different and brings its own challenges but I enjoy the diversity of my role."
Over 16 years' experience
With over 16 years' experience in the cleaning industry Lloyd has also developed his skills in staff management - dealing with recruitment, HR issues, redundancies and disciplinary meetings.
Window & Specialist Cleaning
Simon Howes' career in the Window Cleaning business spans more than 25 years.
Expanded workforce by more than 100%
In 1996, whilst at New Chesterton Cleaning, Simon took on the role of Window Cleaning Manager when the existing manager retired. Over 10 years Simon built his area of the business, expanding the window cleaner team from 19 to 42 employees. In 1996 Simon gained his NEBOSH National General Certificate and subsequently has become a technical member of IOSH.
After 17 years with OCS and its subsidiaries Simon joined Monthind Clean as Business Manager of Window Cleaning, with two window cleaners. In February 2008 Simon took over the Specialist Cleaning division which, coupled with Window Cleaning, employs 17 window cleaners, administration and sales staff - including Debbie, his wife, in telesales and admin, and Ceri Clark in the role of contracts support manager.
Driven by success and high standards
Simon is driven by success and expects a high standard of delivery from his team, who in his eyes are also ambassadors of the company. Simon's ethos is to work with the client's needs on a personal level and deliver value for money with a responsive, professional service.
Simon enjoys spending time with his two children Lauren and Callum and since his retirement from regular football can be found on the golf course trying to improve his handicap.
Director of Sales
Richard Redding has recently joined the Monthind Clean team as Director of Sales, and talks about his career and the challenges his new role brings.
What led you to a career in the commercial cleaning industry?
It was a close call between the Premier League and commercial cleaning! As a teenager, I signed for West Ham with dreams of becoming a professional footballer. Sadly, it wasn't to be, and after a couple of seasons, I was released to play at semi pro level. Winning the inaugural Amateur World Cup in Florida in the mid 80's with Corinthian FC was one of the highlights. I went on to study Graphic Design, which led to my first job in a newspaper publishing firm. Over 15 years I worked my way up to the role of Managing Editor and when the business was acquired, I transferred to the Kent Messenger Group. After three great years there, I decided it was time for a change and entered the world of facilities management, joining the sales team at OCS. Six Years at Mowlem/Carillion followed, before I joined Facilicom.
What qualifies you to lead the group's sales team?
Having spent almost 20 years in the facilities management industry, with the last 11 of those as Commercial Director at Facilicom, I understand the sector and its unique demands, and make a point of tailoring the service to what the client really wants. I have experience of bidding for all types and sizes of contract and leading a busy sales team.
What aspects of the role are you looking forward to most?
That's a difficult one to narrow down. Monthind Clean and Atkins Gregory have earned an excellent reputation through strong, experienced leadership and quality of service, and there are many opportunities for further growth. Leading the sales and marketing team to greater success is an exciting prospect. I'm also looking forward to working with the Operations team; there's bags of talent and experience there.
What attracted you to the group?
I have known Simon Biggs, Monthind's Operations Director and Partner, since we worked together many years ago, and when we started chatting at an industry dinner last year, his passion for the business was almost tangible. After formerly meeting with Simon, Tony Felgate (Monthind's Finance Director and Partner), and the company's private investors to hear about the group's values, its client-focused service, work culture, and plans for growth, I knew I wanted to be part of it. The people-first ethos of the company, and the level of loyalty Monthind and Atkins Gregory have from customers and staff says a lot. I am delighted to have joined the group at such an exciting time.
Business Manager - Sales & Marketing
Monthind's Business Development Manager, Anthony Payne started his career in the glass and glazing industry, covering all aspects of the trade, culminating in a move into Sales. Anthony then followed with five years in the fibre glass industry before changing to the commercial laundry industry, working in both sales and account management roles before joining Monthind Clean LLP in May 2015.
Anthony's reputation throughout his career has been built on going the extra mile for customers and colleagues, and his ethos that the long-term success of any company offering a contracted service is to deliver high standards consistently. This resonates with Monthind's own values.
Joining Monthind as Business Development Manager has presented Anthony with a new chapter in his career, sourcing new business opportunities and extending the operational area of the company. With his client-centric approach a key element to his appointment, Anthony will also be utilising his previous skills to full effect.
In his spare time Anthony helps out with a local charity and is also on the committee of a local club. A keen angler, Anthony is never happier than being either on or near the water.
Business Development Norfolk
Business Development Manager, Tara Culshaw, is based at Monthind's Norfolk office under the management of Business Manager Chris Brown.
Initially Tara's career began in the catering sector where she joined The Catering Guild as a Catering Assistant at Air UK in Norwich (now KLM). Tara completed various college and management courses, culminating in a promotion to Catering Manager.
In the late 90s Tara decided she wanted a career change and entered the world of recruitment, working for a well-regarded Norwich firm. Here she undertook intensive training in Sales & Marketing, Interviewing Techniques, Recruitment & Selection, Health & Safety and First Aid. Her role graduated from Consultant to Senior Consultant, managing major contracts in and around Norwich. While here she achieved an award for Top Temporaries Consultant in the country.
After five years with the company, Tara was headhunted for a Recruitment Manager role, gathering further experience with subsequent career moves.
Monthind were one of Tara's clients in 2010. She joined the company as Business Development Manager, utilising her many transferable skills.
Tara said: "At Monthind we actually listen to what our customers require and provide a tailor-made service which thoroughly supports their business requirements."
Tara's role involves developing new business across Norfolk and North Suffolk, promoting Monthind by attending networking events and ensuring current clients are aware of the full service offer available.
Marketing Executive
Lois is responsible for the Marketing of Monthind Clean.
At Coventry University, Lois studied BA Media and Communications which enabled her to advance her analytical and critical communication skills through the use of twenty-first century media. It also aided personal development in research through the engagement of professional media projects on an international scope. Following on from her Bachelor degree in Media and Communications, Lois then proceeded with a Masters in Marketing Management which provided an insight into a broader range of contemporary issues in marketing. It encouraged creative problem solving and the development of flexible approaches to key marketing issues. Lois feels that her Masters enabled her to adapt to changing marketing conditions and excel in leadership.
As a new associate member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Lois will carry on with her continual professional development as she is eager to progress to full member status.
Business Finance Manager
Sarah has been working at Monthind for nearly 16 years, and is the longest serving member of the office team.
Her first position in the company was with the finance team as payroll and accounts assistant, working in a team of 12 office personnel. Over the years Sarah has been responsible for all aspects of financial management duties and has managed the finance team since 2006.
Today Sarah's current role as Business Finance Manager includes managing a team of 7, which has been streamlined over the years through introducing technology and modern office procedures that have improved efficiency and effectiveness to support the £8.5 million operation. Sarah manages finance, payroll, HR and the stores department which is responsible for the ordering of cleaning materials and equipment across the company.
In addition Sarah has the responsibility for managing the facilities of the three company offices, which includes the head office in Colchester and the two regional offices in Norwich and Gorleston.
Sarah has been instrumental in managing the introduction of all Government Legislation and plays a vital role in previous and future acquisitions.
Besides work commitments Sarah and her team are the leading charge with the company's chosen charity Macmillan, arranging events from the World's Largest Coffee Morning to the annual charity golf day.
Health & Safety Officer
With a multitude of roles under his belt and over 20 years' experience in the service sector, Chris joined Monthind Clean in 2010 where he undertook the role of Business Manager in the new Norwich office, looking after clients across Norfolk.
In 2016 Chris took an interest into the Health and Safety role at Monthind Clean, he wanted to put his knowledge of the business and his strengths into another area and felt that he was at the right stage to accomplish this. Chris has a keen interest in Health and wellbeing which is becoming more topical and relevant today, in the past Health and Safety focussed primarily on the Safety aspect. Chris feels that by having an in-house Health and Safety Officer it adds value to the company by looking after the wellbeing of all of the Monthind Clean employees and clients. It enables Monthind Clean to react to situations quickly, and with Chris' thorough knowledge of the way our services are delivered it gives his colleagues and clients the confidence that the work will be carried out safely and effectively.
Chris enjoys the variety within his Health and Safety Officer position at Monthind Clean, his role enables him to have regular visits to our clients, develop a positive Health and Safety Culture within the workplace, and ensure that Monthind Clean complies with Health and Safety legislation and best practices.
Away from work, Chris enjoys spending time with his family, and leading an active lifestyle. Chris is taking part in the Tour de Broads in August for the second year where he will accomplish a 100-mile bike ride in aid of East Anglian Air Ambulance. Chris also supports his local football club (Norwich City), and enjoys playing the drums and signing in a band.
Business Services Manager
Andy has recently joined the team at Monthind Clean and is responsible for IT Systems, Quality (ISO9001) and the Company's environmental policy (ISO14001).
He has over 30 years IT and Systems experience working for Company's such as Siemens Nixdorf (Roll out of the Tesco EPOS system), MSC Shipping (Development and management of their bespoke shipping system), and 14 years working for BT at their Adastral Park research and development centre, where he managed some of their large test platforms.
In his spare time Andy has a passion for music, photography, hiking and travel.
