Large infrastructure projects currently underpin a “buoyant” mood in the construction sector, according to a new report.
The survey, called the Infrastructure Outlook Report, was commissioned by construction firm Tarmac and produced by research company Ipsos Mori. It found that two-thirds of those surveyed were optimistic about the coming 12 months in the UK construction industry.
However, two-thirds of respondents also said that more needed to be done to meet the country’s infrastructure needs.
A number of new infrastructure projects are underway across the UK, the biggest of which are the HS2 high-speed rail link and a £15bn road building programme.
Building firms taking on new work at faster rate
The feel-good factor extends to other areas of construction, too. According to the CIPS/Markit purchasing managers’ index (PMI) for the construction industry, in October building companies took on new work at the fastest rate for 12 months.
Construction industry in “rude health”
Markit said: “The latest rise in incoming new work was the steepest since October 2014, with construction companies highlighting new project wins from both public and private sector clients.”
Tim Moore, a senior economist at Markit, said: “Another relatively buoyant construction PMI reading indicates that the sector remains in rude health.”
