“It’s getting more and more difficult to spot malicious emails,” explains Andy Flatman, our Business Services Manager here at Monthind Clean. “Anti-spam and anti-virus software deals with a lot of the issues but sophisticated ‘spoofing’, where emails appear to be from a legitimate sender, are become more common. These contain links encouraging users to reveal personal data, usernames and passwords.”
Andy took the initiative this year to regularly runs email security workshops to help train colleagues here at Monthind Clean. “This helps users look for the signs that an email may be malicious, but we’re all busy people and it’s hard to scrutinise every email.”
In addition to anti-virus and anti-spam, Monthind Clean uses Advance Threat Protection for email. Developed by Microsoft for Office 365, ATP is designed to prevent both malicious attachments and links to affecting the user and the business.
All suspicious content is automatically analysed using AI on Microsoft’s servers and all attachments are ‘sandboxed’ and scanned before being either released to the recipients or quarantined. All email links are also AI scanned by Microsoft and if a link is unsafe the user is warned not to visit the site or informed that the site has been blocked. Reporting is available to track which users clicked a link and when they clicked it.
“Advance Threat Protection is a great failsafe. It’s an extra pair of eyes that ensures even if someone does click on a dangerous link that they, their colleagues and the business remain protected. The cost of ATP is minor compared to the potential cost and disruption of a security breach,” adds Andy.
